Deposit Account Information To Be Shared To Help Credit Approvals For Those Without Credit Scores

A number of large financial instutitions (JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank) have agreed to share data on customers deposit accounts. The aim is to be able to extend credit to individuals without credit scores but are financially responsible and is part of a government back initiative (Project REACh, or the Roundtable for Economic Access and Change). It will looked at consumers overdraft history and their balances over time.

In 2018 credit scoring company FICO introduced the UltraFICO score that is based on checking history and includes factors such as: Current checking balance, Length of checking history, Transaction frequency, Overdraw history. Individual financial institutions have been using their own customers deposit account data to help in lending decisions, with JPMorgan being able to approve an additional 700,000 credit cards. Under this new pilot program that information will be shared between lenders.

CDC: Masks Not Required Indoors For Fully Vaccinated (Unless Required By Local Laws/Regulation)

CDC has relaxed it’s guidance for wearing a mask indoors for those that are fully vaccinated. The update section states (emphasis ours):

Risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection is minimal for fully vaccinated people. The risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from fully vaccinated people to unvaccinated people is also reduced. Therefore, fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. Fully vaccinated people should also continue to wear a well-fitted mask in correctional facilities and homeless shelters. Prevention measures are still recommended for unvaccinated people.

As always, play nice in the comments. We will probably lock them after awhile as nothing good ever comes from the comments on these types of posts.

Citi Rewards+: 25,000 Point Sign Up Bonus

Update 5/13/21: The link below is now increased from 20,000 to 25,000 (standard offer on Citi website is 15,000). Not sure if the in-branch 30,000/40,000 offer is still around.

Update 10/14/19: This deal is being offered again. Keep in mind there is an in branch 30,000/40,000 points. Hat tip to reader Khmalh

The Offer

Direct link to offer (seems to only be available via Credit Karma)

  • Citi is offering an increased sign up bonus on the Citi Rewards+ card, 20,000 Citi ThankYou points after $1,500 in purchases within the first three months

Card Details

  • No annual fee
  • Card earns ThankYou points
  • Earn 2x points on grocery and gas, up to $6,000 per year, then 1x
  • Earn 1x points on everything else
  • Bonus ThankYou Points are not available if you received a new cardmember bonus for Citi Rewards+℠, Citi ThankYou®Preferred, Citi ThankYou® Premier/Citi Premier℠ or Citi Prestige®, or if you have closed any of these cards, in the past 24 months.
  • Low intro rate on purchases and balance transfers
  • 3% foreign transaction fee
  • 10% rebate on all redeemed points each year, on up to the first 100,000 redeemed points

Our Verdict

Launch sign up bonus was 15,000 points, we also saw a 10,000 point + $100 live nation credit. Still not really worth it because of the 24 month restrictive language, better to get a sign up bonus on the Premier or Prestige.  If you have any questions about Citi cards, read this post as they are most likely answered there.

Cheese Checking Account Review: No SSN Required, 0.3-3% APY Savings, Debit Card Rewards

[This review has been revamped and reposted on 5/13/21. Originally posted on 1/6/2020. These have been written by Evan Mullen. See his prior posts here.]

The Cheese Checking Account is now available for iOS, and should be available for Android in June. The account structure has been revamped since originally writing about it, updated review can be found below.

Cheese Checking

  • Direct Link
  • My iOS referral link, which gets you an initial 3% APY (must be used on mobile)
  • My Android referral link (TBD), which gets you an initial 3% APY

Cheese is targeted for immigrants and Asian Americans, but the account actually offers several competitive banking features. Here are the major highlights of the account:

  • No SSN required to open account (this feature should be available in May)
  • FDIC-insured up to $250,000
  • No Fees
  • Paycheck up to 2 days early
  • Cashback debit card
  • Interest checking

They are also currently donating $10 for every new user until June 10th, up to $90,000.

Cashback Debit Card

There is a base 0.25% cashback rate on the debit card. They also have higher cashback offers from Dosh, and some additional exclusive cashback offers which they plan to continue to grow. Here are the current exclusive offers:

  • 5% on phone bills (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, Mint Mobile, Cricket)
  • 1% on pay later services (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay)
  • 5% at McDonald’s
  • 2% at Target
  • 2% at Uber Eats
  • 2% at Instacart
  • 2% at Wendy’s
  • 5% at Asian Lifestyle: Chowbus
  • 3% at Weee!
  • 3% at Yamibuy
  • 2% at Fantuan
  • 2% at HungryPanda
  • 2% at Doordash
  • 2% at 99 Ranch
  • 2% at H Mart
  • 2% at MINISO

There is a $25 minimum cashback redemption and a $10 daily maximum for the 0.25% and exclusive offers. (Dosh maximums are separate.)

Interest Checking

The basic APY is 0.3%.  If you are referred, you and the person who referred you will both receive a boost to 3% APY for 30 days. The referrer stacks on another 30 days to the 3% boost for each additional referral. The 0.3% APY has no cap, but the 3% APY has a monthly cap of $25. So if you have the 3% boost for the month, anything over about $10,000 would only earn 0.3% APY.

Final Thoughts

Though targeted for immigrants and Asian Americans, this account could also be very useful to international students and people with poor or no credit history. Even if you don’t fall into any of these categories, the account still has some unique aspects. The current features that stand out the most for me are the 5% cashback categories and the 1% on pay later services. It will be interesting to see what other exclusive offers get added in the future.
