Marriott Removes Award Chart, Extends Status, Top Off Award Certificates & More

Marriott has announced a number of major changes to its loyalty program. The changes are as follows:

  • Marriott will move to dynamic award pricing from March 2022 and award chart will be removed.
    • Marriott has said that 97% of properties will still price between the current off peak and peak pricing until the end of 2022.
    • From 2023 there will be no limits on the amount of points properties can cost
    • Fifth night free benefit will remain
  • Ability to add points to free night certificates. You’ll be able to add up to 15,000 points to a free night certificate. For example if a property costs 65,000 points and you have a 50,000 free night certificate you can use the certificate and add 15,000 points.
  • Elite status will be extended through February 2023
  • Suite night awards, free night awards will be extended through June 2022
  • Points will not expire through December 2022

Our Verdict

Marriott claims that adding dynamic pricing will increase award inventory, but unless the compensation better award nights and cash stays is fundamentally changed I don’t see how that will be the case. In addition there’s not much point in having increased inventory if all of that inventory is extremely overpriced. It’ll be interesting to see if Marriott moves to a fixed price redemption similar to Southwest or how they determine how much award nights will cost.

The ability to top off award night certificates is great, but the cap of 15,000 points is frustrating especially when award nights across the board are likely to get far more expensive.

Overall if you have Marriott points (or really any hotel or airline currency) you’re better off trying to use them sooner rather than later.
